What is Investment Casting?

A Precision Metal Casting Process

Coating Image

Investment casting, also known as precision casting or lost wax casting, is a manufacturing process that has been utilized for centuries to create intricate and highly detailed metal parts. This process involves creating a wax pattern that is coated with a ceramic material to form a mould. Once the ceramic material hardens, the wax is melted away, leaving a hollow mould that can be filled with molten metal. After the metal solidifies, the ceramic shell is broken away to reveal a precise and finely detailed cast part.

The investment casting process is highly valued for its ability to produce components with complex geometries, tight tolerances, and smooth surface finishes. This makes it an ideal choice for applications requiring precision and reliability.

Investment casting is cost-effective for both small and large production runs, providing flexibility to meet varying quantity requirements. It is suitable for prototype development, low-volume production, as well as high-volume manufacturing.

Investment Casting Process

From Raw Materials to Precision Components

The investment casting process is a meticulous and detailed method that ensures high precision and quality in the final product. Here’s a step-by-step overview of how it works:
Wax Injection

Wax Injection

The process begins with the creation of a wax pattern, which is an exact replica of the part to be cast. These patterns are typically made using injection molding.

Assembly Image

Assembly

Multiple wax patterns are often assembled onto a central wax sprue to form a tree-like structure. This allows multiple parts to be cast in a single batch.

Coating Image

Shell Coating

The wax assembly is repeatedly dipped into a ceramic slurry and coated with fine sand to create a ceramic shell mold. This process is repeated several times to build a thick, durable shell around the wax patterns.

Dewaxing

Dewaxing

The ceramic mold is heated in a kiln, which causes the wax to melt and drain away, leaving a hollow ceramic shell. This step is known as the “lost wax” process.

Melting & Pouring Image

Melting & Pouring

The ceramic shell is preheated to remove any residual wax and to prepare it for the metal pouring. Preheating also helps to prevent thermal shock when the molten metal is poured.

Knock-Out Image

Knock Out

The preheated mold is filled with molten metal. This can be done using gravity, vacuum, or pressure to ensure the metal fills all the intricate details of the mold.

Shot Blasting Image

Shot Blasting

Once the metal has been poured, the mold is allowed to cool and solidify. This cooling period is critical to achieving the desired mechanical properties and dimensional accuracy.

Fettling

Fettling

After the metal has solidified, the ceramic shell is broken away, revealing the rough cast parts. This step may involve mechanical, chemical, or thermal methods.

Inspection

The individual cast parts are cut from the central sprue. The parts then undergo various finishing processes, such as grinding, sanding, or machining, to achieve the final specifications.
